Going to South Africa was never on my to do list but about a year ago, my boyfriend won this amazing trip to swim with sharks during a 5 day trip in Cape Town. Of course, we wouldn’t go to South Africa just for one thing, so we decided to extend our trip and do a safari trip and 2,5 days of boredom (that wasn’t the plan intentionally but oh well). So a year later, on July 1st, we took the plane and off we were.
I didn’t know what to expect from this country. I had been to a far away destination before – the Philippines back in 2010 – but that was totally different. Twelve hours of flying later, we arrived in Cape Town Airport. After a quick nap in the lovely hotel, we wanted some lunch so we just walked in the city. The weird thing for me was that Cape Town doesn’t have its own ‘Grand Place’ (Brussels) or Placa Catalunya (Barcelona), so we didn’t really know where to go. We did hear that the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront was quite popular and a must see, so we went there. It’s kind of a mall and meeting point with a view of Table Mountain and the harbor, quite nice in other words! We were a bit overwhelmed by all the boat trips they had to offer so we decided to go sky high, with a helicopter!
Mister William, pilot on duty, showed us Cape Town from up above, which was so beautiful but still weird, since we didn’t actually know what was beneath us. Luckily we had the time to explore it for a few more days. Afterwards we had dinner at the Waterfront, with all the beautiful lights of the harbor in the background.
I kept thinking: ‘I’m in Cape Town, South Africa… how cool is that?!’
